Description

Crispy and flavorful Teriyaki Tofu made effortlessly in an air fryer. This recipe features firm tofu coated in a seasoned potato starch mixture, air fried to a golden perfection, and glazed with savory teriyaki sauce, topped with toasted sesame seeds and fresh spring onions for a delicious plant-based dish.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 block firm tofu (255 grams)
  • 2 tablespoons teriyaki sauce
  • 4 tablespoons potato starch
  • 1/8 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

For Garnish

  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • Fresh spring onions

Instructions

  1. Drain and Press Tofu: Drain the tofu and lightly press it dry using paper towels. Place the tofu on a paper towel-lined plate and cover it with more paper towels. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  2. Cut Tofu: Slice the block of tofu into four equal portions, then cut each portion into four bite-sized pieces approximately 1 inch thick and 1 1/2 inches long, making a total of 16 pieces.
  3. Coat Tofu: Combine potato starch, sea salt, and ground black pepper on a plate. Carefully coat each tofu piece evenly with this potato starch mixture to create a crispy outer layer.
  4. Preheat Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 396°F (202°C) and set the timer for 30 minutes to prepare for cooking.
  5. Arrange Tofu in Air Fryer: Gently place each coated tofu piece onto the air fryer tray lined with parchment paper. Insert the tray into the middle cooking chamber near the rotisserie catch, if using an air fryer oven.
  6. Alternatively Use Basket: If your air fryer uses a basket instead of a tray, place the coated tofu pieces evenly into the basket following your appliance instructions.
  7. Air Fry Tofu: Cook the coated tofu for 25 minutes or until golden brown, flipping the pieces halfway through the cooking time to ensure even crisping.
  8. Lower Temperature: Reduce the air fryer temperature to 370°F (188°C) in preparation for the teriyaki glaze step.
  9. Apply Teriyaki Sauce: Brush each air-fried tofu piece generously with teriyaki sauce to impart rich flavor.
  10. Continue Air Frying: Air fry the teriyaki-coated tofu for an additional 3 to 5 minutes, flipping halfway through to caramelize the sauce evenly.
  11. Serve: Remove the tray from the air fryer and immediately transfer the tofu onto a serving plate to maintain crispness.
  12. Garnish: Sprinkle the tofu with toasted sesame seeds and fresh spring onions for added texture and fresh flavor before serving.

Notes

  • Pressing the tofu well removes excess moisture, allowing it to crisp better in the air fryer.
  • Potato starch creates a light, crispy coating that crisps up nicely in the air fryer without oil.
  • Adjust the flipping times depending on your air fryer model to achieve even browning.
  • Use parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  • Serve with steamed rice or vegetables for a complete meal.
