Description

Delight in these spooky and delicious Spider Web Cookies, featuring rich chocolate dough generously studded with chocolate chips and topped with gooey melted mini marshmallows that create a fun spider web effect. Perfect for Halloween or any fun occasion, these cookies combine a soft, fudgy texture with a playful, sweet topping.

Ingredients

Chocolate Cookie Dough

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ cups packed brown sugar
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups milk or semi-sweet chocolate chips

Spider Web Topping

  • 10 oz bag mini marshmallows

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugars: Using a hand or stand mixer, cream the room temperature unsalted butter with the granulated sugar and packed brown sugar for about 2 minutes until light and fluffy. Then add the eggs and vanilla extract, mixing until fully combined.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, and kosher salt until thoroughly mixed.
  4. Mix Dry and Wet Ingredients: Slowly add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture. Mix on low speed just until combined to avoid overmixing, which can toughen the cookies. Stir in the milk or semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly through the dough.
  5. Scoop the Cookies: Use a 2 oz cookie scoop or a ¼ cup measuring cup to portion out the cookie dough. Arrange 6 cookies at a time on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them to allow for spreading.
  6. Bake the Cookies: Bake in the preheated oven for about 12 minutes. The cookies are best when slightly underbaked to maintain a soft, chewy center. Once baking is complete, let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2-3 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Prepare the Spider Web Topping: Place the mini marshmallows in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 45 seconds to 1 minute. Remove and stir the marshmallows. Continue microwaving in 15-second increments, stirring in between, until the marshmallows are fully melted and smooth.
  8. Add Topping to Cookies: Once cookies have cooled, spoon or drizzle the melted marshmallows on top to create a spider web effect. Allow the marshmallow topping to set slightly before serving for a fun, spooky presentation.

Notes

  • For extra spooky fun, you can add plastic spider rings on or around the cookies once the marshmallow topping has set.
  • If you prefer, you can use white chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet for a different flavor profile.
  • Do not overbake the cookies to keep them soft and chewy; they will continue to cook slightly on the hot baking sheet.
  • If marshmallows become too thick to spread, warm them a few seconds more to soften.
