Ingredients
For the Dumplings
- 1 (16.3 ounce) can Southern homestyle buttermilk biscuits (such as Pillsbury Grands!®)
- 8 frozen cooked breakfast sausage patties, thawed and halved (such as Jimmy Dean®)
- 2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter, divided (plus 1/4 cup for gravy)
For the Cream Gravy
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 3/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more for garnish
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
- 4 ounces sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Wrap Sausage with Biscuit Dough: Separate the biscuits and split each horizontally to create 16 rounds. Slightly flatten each round. Place one thawed and halved sausage patty in the center of each biscuit round. Wrap the biscuit dough around the sausage half and pinch the edges to seal completely.
- Arrange Dumplings and First Bake: Place each wrapped dumpling seam side down in an even layer in the prepared baking dish. Brush the tops with 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown and set, about 18 to 20 minutes.
- Prepare the Cream Gravy: While dumplings bake, melt the remaining 1/4 cup butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture is smooth and lightly bubbling, about 1 to 2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the whole milk until the gravy is smooth. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and optional hot sauce.
- Simmer and Thicken Gravy: Bring the gravy to a simmer over medium heat. Cook, whisking frequently, until it thickens slightly, about 5 to 8 minutes.
- Add Gravy and Cheese, Second Bake: Pour the prepared gravy evenly over the partially baked dumplings. Sprinkle the shredded sharp Cheddar cheese over the top. Return the dish to the oven and bake until the gravy bubbles and cheese melts, approximately 5 minutes.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven, garnish with additional freshly ground black pepper if desired, and serve hot for a comforting breakfast treat.
Notes
- Thaw sausage patties before assembling for even cooking.
- You can substitute sharp Cheddar cheese with a cheese blend or mozzarella if preferred.
- Optional hot sauce in the gravy adds a subtle kick but can be omitted for milder flavor.
- Use fresh black pepper for best flavor in the gravy and garnish.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated gently in the oven to preserve texture.
