Description

These spooky Rice Krispies Brains are a fun and easy Halloween treat featuring crispy rice cereal coated in melted marshmallows tinted with red food coloring. Shaped to resemble brains with indents and red 'blood' streaks, they are perfect for festive gatherings and kids' parties.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 5 cups (132g) Rice Krispies or any crispy rice cereal
  • ¼ cup (57g) unsalted butter
  • 1 10-oz bag (283g) mini marshmallows (about 8 cups)
  • Red food coloring (about 6 drops plus extra for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Prepare baking sheet: Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking and set aside.
  2. Measure cereal: Place the Rice Krispies cereal in a large bowl and set it aside for later use.
  3. Melt butter and marshmallows: In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the mini marshmallows and stir continuously until they have completely melted into a smooth mixture. Once melted, add about 6 drops of red food coloring to achieve a pinkish hue; remember the color will lighten when mixed with the cereal.
  4. Combine cereal and marshmallow mixture: Remove the saucepan from heat and immediately add the Rice Krispies to the melted marshmallow mixture. Stir well until all cereal pieces are evenly coated.
  5. Form brain shapes: Lightly spray an ice cream scoop or ¼ cup measuring cup with non-stick spray to prevent sticking. Scoop a portion of the mixture and gently drop it onto the prepared baking sheet. Using your hands, shape each mound into a slightly oblong circle resembling a brain.
  6. Create brain indentations: Take the handle of a butter knife and make an indent in the top of each Rice Krispies brain shape. Then, using the non-blade side of the knife and your free hand, gently push the two halves of the brain shape closer together to enhance the look.
  7. Add red 'blood' streaks: Put a few drops of red food coloring into a small bowl and use a clean paintbrush to carefully paint streaks of 'blood' onto the brains for a spooky effect.
  8. Cool and store: Allow the Rice Krispies brains to cool and set completely before serving. Store the treats in an airtight container for up to one week to maintain freshness.

Notes

  • Be careful not to overheat marshmallows to avoid burning; melt them on low heat and stir frequently.
  • You can customize the red coloring intensity or try other colors for different effects.
  • Use wax paper or lightly greased hands to shape the mixture to prevent sticking.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature; avoid refrigeration which can harden the treats.
  • Optionally, use edible markers or candy decorations to add more details to the brains.
