Delicate prawn wonton pinwheels filled with juicy seasoned prawns, gently steamed until tender, and lightly coated in a savory soy-based sauce. This elegant and flavorful appetizer is surprisingly easy to prepare at home, perfect for impressing guests or enjoying a tasty snack.
Ingredients
Filling
- 500 grams raw prawns, peeled, deveined, and finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, finely grated
- 2 green onions, finely sliced
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
Wontons and Serving Sauce
- 24 square wonton wrappers, about 8 centimeters each
- 1/3 cup light soy-based sauce mixed with 1 tablespoon warm water, for serving
- Water for moistening wonton edges
- Oil for greasing steamer basket
- Parchment paper for lining steamer basket
Instructions
- Prepare the Steamer: Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a gentle simmer. Lightly oil a steamer basket to prevent sticking and place it over the pot, ensuring it does not touch the water.
- Make the Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the finely chopped prawns, minced garlic, grated ginger, sliced green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, salt, and white pepper. Mix thoroughly until the mixture becomes slightly sticky and well blended, which helps the filling hold together during steaming.
- Line the Steamer Basket: Cut parchment paper to fit inside the steamer basket and puncture small holes throughout it to allow steam circulation. Place the parchment paper inside the steamer basket.
- Assemble the Pinwheels: Place one tablespoon of the prawn filling in the center of each wonton wrapper. Lightly moisten the edges of the wrapper with water to seal, then fold gently and twist to form a pinwheel shape, pressing edges firmly to seal and prevent bursting.
- Steam the Pinwheels: Arrange the assembled pinwheels in the steamer basket, ensuring they do not touch to allow even steaming. Cover and steam over simmering water for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the filling is opaque and fully cooked through.
- Serve: Carefully remove the steamed pinwheels from the basket. Spoon a small amount of the prepared soy-based sauce over the pinwheels for added flavor. Serve immediately while warm and tender with extra sauce on the side if desired.
Notes
- Keep wonton wrappers covered with a damp cloth while assembling to prevent them from drying out and becoming brittle.
- Do not overfill the wrappers to avoid the filling bursting out during steaming.
- You can freeze assembled but uncooked pinwheels in a single layer. Steam them directly from frozen, increasing steaming time by 2 to 3 minutes.
