Description

This Philly Cheesesteak Cheesy Bread is a flavorful and satisfying appetizer or meal made with sautéed ground beef, sweet onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, and sharp Provolone cheese on crusty French bread. It offers a delicious twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich, baked to perfection with a cheesy golden top, perfect for sharing or serving as a hearty snack.

Ingredients

Bread & Spread

  • 1 loaf French bread, cut in half lengthwise
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise

Vegetables & Meat

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small sweet onion, diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, diced
  • 4 ounces button mushrooms, diced
  • 1 pound lean ground beef

Seasonings & Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/3 cup low sodium beef broth

Cheese & Garnish

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Provolone or Monterey Jack cheese
  • Red pepper flakes, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the assembled cheesy bread.
  2. Prepare the bread: Slice the French bread loaf lengthwise and scoop out some of the soft interior, leaving a 1-inch border intact. Spread mayonnaise evenly over both halves; then place them on a baking sheet.
  3. Sauté vegetables and brown beef: Heat olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add diced onion, green bell pepper, and mushrooms, cooking until tender, about 2 minutes. Add lean ground beef and cook, breaking it into small crumbles until fully browned and no pink remains, about 3 more minutes. Drain excess fat.
  4. Flavor and thicken the filling: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and beef broth, then add this mixture to the skillet. Gently simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef mixture thickens slightly.
  5. Assemble the bread: Evenly divide and spread the beef and vegetable filling over both bread halves.
  6. Add cheese: Sprinkle the shredded Provolone or Monterey Jack cheese generously over the filling on each bread half.
  7. Bake the cheesy bread: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and begins to brown. Alternatively, you can broil the bread for 1 to 2 minutes to achieve a golden top.
  8. Serve: Remove from the oven and cut into 2-inch portions for appetizers or larger slices for a lunch or dinner serving.
  9. Garnish and enjoy: Sprinkle a pinch of red pepper flakes over the top for heat and added color, if desired, then serve and enjoy your Philly Cheesesteak Cheesy Bread.

Notes

  • Using a lean ground beef helps reduce excess grease.
  • You can substitute beef broth with vegetable broth if preferred.
  • The bread halves can be prepared ahead of time and assembled just before baking.
  • For extra spice, add more red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in the oven for best texture.
