Description

These authentic Kentucky bourbon balls are smooth, rich, and deliciously boozy candy treats featuring chopped nuts soaked in Kentucky bourbon, blended with confectioners' sugar and butter, and coated in melted semisweet chocolate. Perfect as a festive dessert or a special treat.

Ingredients

Soaking Mixture

  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 5 tablespoons Kentucky bourbon

Bourbon Ball Mixture

  • 1 (16 ounce) package confectioners' sugar
  • ½ cup butter, softened

Chocolate Coating

  • 18 ounces semisweet chocolate
  • waxed paper (for lining)

Instructions

  1. Gather Ingredients: Assemble all ingredients to ensure everything is ready before beginning the process.
  2. Soak Nuts: Place the chopped nuts into a sealable jar. Pour the Kentucky bourbon over the nuts, seal the jar tightly, and let the nuts soak for 8 hours to overnight to absorb the bourbon flavor completely.
  3. Mix Dough: In a medium bowl, combine the confectioners' sugar and softened butter. Fold in the bourbon-soaked nuts along with any remaining bourbon from the jar, mixing until a firm dough forms.
  4. Form Balls and Chill: Using your hands or a small scoop, form the mixture into 3/4-inch balls. Place the balls on a tray or plate and refrigerate for 8 hours to overnight to allow the mixture to firm up.
  5. Prepare for Coating: Line a baking tray with waxed paper to catch any excess chocolate.
  6. Melt Chocolate: Set up a double boiler by placing a heatproof bowl over a pot of barely simmering water. Add the semisweet chocolate to the bowl and gently melt it, stirring frequently and scraping down the sides with a rubber spatula to prevent scorching.
  7. Coat Bourbon Balls: Dip each chilled bourbon ball into the melted chocolate, fully coating it. Use a fork or dipping tool to lift the balls and let excess chocolate drip back into the bowl. Place the coated balls onto the waxed paper-lined tray.
  8. Store and Serve: Refrigerate the bourbon balls until the chocolate coating is set and firm, then store them in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, allow the nuts to soak in bourbon overnight.
  • Use good quality Kentucky bourbon for authentic taste.
  • Ensure the butter is softened to room temperature for easier mixing.
  • If a double boiler is not available, melt chocolate carefully in short bursts in a microwave, stirring frequently.
  • Bourbon balls keep well refrigerated for up to two weeks.
  • To make these gluten-free, verify the nuts and chocolate are gluten-free certified.
