Description

This homemade Stromboli recipe features a soft, flavorful pizza dough filled with layers of savory deli meats, melted cheese, and your choice of sauce and add-ins, all baked to golden perfection. Perfect for a hearty dinner or a fun party treat, this classic Italian-American dish is easy to prepare using the DeLallo Pizza Dough Kit and customizable with your favorite fillings and toppings.

Ingredients

Pizza Dough

  • 1 (17.6-ounce) DeLallo Pizza Dough Kit (yields 2 large stromboli)
  • Kosher salt, a pinch
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water

Filling

  • 3 tablespoons sauce of choice (e.g., marinara, pizza sauce)
  • 2 cups shredded cheese of choice, divided (such as mozzarella or provolone)
  • 8 ounces thinly sliced deli meats of choice (e.g., salami, ham, pepperoni)
  • Up to 4 ounces thinly sliced add-ins of choice, divided (optional; such as bell peppers, onions, mushrooms)

Egg Wash and Toppings

  • 1 large egg, whisked with 1 tablespoon water
  • Optional toppings: Italian seasoning, ground black pepper, garlic salt, chopped fresh parsley, grated Parmesan cheese

Serving

  • Warmed sauce of choice for dipping
  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • Chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pizza dough kit: At least 1 hour before assembling the stromboli, combine the DeLallo Pizza Dough Kit contents with a pinch of kosher salt in a large bowl. Add warm water, stirring until the dough starts to come together. Turn the shaggy, wet dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 2-3 minutes until smooth and soft. Transfer to a lightly greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  2. Preheat the oven: When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 425°F (218°C) and position a rack in the bottom third of the oven.
  3. Prepare the stromboli dough: Using a knife or bench scraper, divide the risen dough into two equal pieces (approximately 12-15 ounces each). On a lightly floured surface, roll each piece into a 10×14-inch rectangle using your fingers to flatten and a rolling pin to stretch.
  4. Assemble the stromboli: Brush 3 tablespoons of sauce over one dough rectangle, leaving a 1-inch border on two short sides and one long side, and a 2-3 inch border on the opposite long side to aid rolling. Sprinkle 1 cup shredded cheese evenly over the sauce, layer 8 ounces of deli meats atop the cheese, then sprinkle another cup of shredded cheese over the meats. Add up to 4 ounces of optional sliced add-ins if desired.
  5. Fold the stromboli: Brush the exposed dough edges with egg wash. Fold the two short sides toward the center, then start rolling from the side with the 1-inch border toward the wider border, tucking the short sides as you go. Aim to fold twice so the filling is sealed inside. Transfer the stromboli to a parchment-lined rimmed baking sheet. Brush the top with more egg wash, cut 4 small slits on top to vent steam, and sprinkle optional toppings over the surface. Repeat for the second stromboli.
  6. Bake the stromboli: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Slice and serve: Allow the stromboli to rest for 5 minutes before slicing into 1 1/2-inch cross sections. Serve warm with additional sauce, grated Parmesan, and parsley for dipping and garnish as desired.

Notes

  • Use a floured surface and rolling pin to prevent sticking and ensure even dough thickness.
  • Allow the dough to rise in a warm spot to achieve a light, airy crust.
  • Customize fillings to your preference with different meats, cheeses, and vegetables.
  • Egg wash not only seals the dough edges but gives the crust a glossy golden finish.
  • Make-ahead tip: Prepare stromboli up to folding stage, refrigerate, and bake within 24 hours for fresh taste.
  • Slice with a sharp knife for clean cross-sections to serve.
  • Serve with warmed marinara or pizza sauce for dipping.
