Description

This Healthy Onion Dip recipe offers a delicious and nutritious twist on traditional onion dip by using caramelized onions combined with cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, and mayonnaise for a creamy, flavorful dip that's perfect for snacking or entertaining.

Ingredients

Caramelized Onions

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar

Dip Base

  • 3/4 cup cottage cheese
  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: Add one tablespoon of butter to a large skillet and melt it over medium heat, swirling to coat the pan evenly. Add the very thinly sliced onions and stir to coat them with butter. Sprinkle with salt and sugar, stirring to distribute evenly.
  2. Cook the onions: Keep the heat at medium and cook the onions for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Check that the pan is not too dry; add a splash of water if needed to prevent sticking.
  3. Finish caramelizing: Reduce the heat slightly to medium-low and continue cooking for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the onions reach a deep brown color.
  4. Cool and chop: Let the caramelized onions cool slightly, then transfer them to a cutting board and finely chop. Set aside. The onions can be prepared a day in advance for convenience.
  5. Blend the dip base: Using a blender, food processor, or immersion blender, blend the cottage cheese until smooth. Add the Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, balsamic vinegar, vegetarian Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder. Blend again until completely smooth.
  6. Combine with onions: Stir the finely chopped caramelized onions into the blended dip base.
  7. Chill the dip: Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dip for about 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld. The dip can be prepared up to 2 days ahead of time.

Notes

  • Use vegetarian Worcestershire sauce to keep the dip vegetarian-friendly.
  • Adjust the sweetness by varying the sugar amount in the caramelized onions.
  • The dip can be served with fresh vegetables, crackers, or chips.
  • For a smoother texture, ensure cottage cheese is well blended.
  • Prepare the caramelized onions in advance to save time when assembling the dip.
