Description

This Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp recipe features succulent shrimp coated in a flavorful blend of glutinous rice flour, paprika, and cayenne pepper, then pan-cooked to crispy perfection and tossed in a fragrant garlic butter sauce. Finished with fresh lemon juice and parsley, this dish offers a vibrant, savory taste that's quick to prepare and perfect for a delicious weeknight meal or island-inspired feast.

Ingredients

Shrimp and Coating

  • 1 lb shrimp, deveined
  • 2 tablespoons glutinous rice flour (sweet rice flour) or all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 ½ teaspoon salt

Garlic Butter Sauce

  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ cup (100 g) garlic, minced (about 2 heads of garlic)
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, minced for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the shrimp: Wash and devein the shrimp. You may peel the shrimp leaving the tails on or keep the shells on according to your preference. Pat the shrimp dry thoroughly with a paper towel to ensure proper coating and crispiness when cooked.
  2. Coat the shrimp: In a mixing bowl, combine the glutinous rice flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, and salt. Evenly coat each shrimp piece with the flour mixture and set aside.
  3. Cook garlic butter: Heat a medium skillet over medium heat and melt the unsalted butter. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 2 minutes until the garlic is fragrant and lightly golden brown, being careful not to burn it. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Cook the shrimp: Using the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high and add olive oil. When the oil is hot, add the shrimp in a single layer. Cook for 1-2 minutes on each side until the shrimp are crisp and cooked through. Cook in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding, adding more oil before each batch.
  5. Combine: Turn off the heat and pour the prepared garlic butter sauce back into the skillet with the cooked shrimp. Toss gently to coat the shrimp evenly with the garlic butter.
  6. Serve: Drizzle the shrimp with freshly squeezed lemon juice and garnish with minced fresh parsley. Serve immediately and enjoy the vibrant flavors.

Notes

  • Glutinous rice flour gives a crispy texture; if unavailable, all-purpose flour can be used but with slightly less crispiness.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper to your preferred spice level.
  • Ensure shrimp are patted dry well for the best coating adherence.
  • Cook shrimp in batches to avoid steaming instead of frying.
  • Fresh garlic is key for the authentic garlic butter flavor.
  • Serve with rice or crusty bread to soak up the garlic butter sauce.
