Description

This Dirt Cake recipe is a delightful and fun dessert featuring a moist chocolate cake base soaked with rich hot fudge, layered with creamy chocolate pudding, and topped with a fluffy cool whip and crunchy crushed Oreos. Perfect for parties or family gatherings, this cake combines texture and flavor beautifully for a crowd-pleasing treat.

Ingredients

Chocolate Cake Base

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients as directed on the box)
  • 12.8 oz hot fudge

Pudding Layers

  • 3.4 oz chocolate instant pudding mix (for first layer)
  • 1 3/4 cups milk (for first layer)
  • 3.4 oz chocolate instant pudding mix (for topping layer)
  • 1 3/4 cups milk (for topping layer)

Topping

  • 8 oz Cool Whip, thawed
  • 30 Oreos, crushed (about 3/4 for pudding mix, remaining for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cake: Follow package instructions to prepare the chocolate cake mix, then bake as directed. Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool for 10 minutes.
  2. Poke Cake Holes: Use the end of a spoon to poke holes evenly across the warm cake surface, creating spaces for the hot fudge to seep in.
  3. Pour Hot Fudge: Warm the hot fudge in the microwave until it is thin enough to pour easily. Pour it evenly over the cake, allowing it to fill the poked holes. Let the cake cool completely.
  4. Make First Pudding Layer: In a medium bowl, combine the first package of chocolate instant pudding mix with 1 3/4 cups of milk. Mix until slightly thickened but not fully set. Pour this pudding layer evenly over the cooled cake. Refrigerate the cake for about 20 minutes to allow it to chill and set slightly.
  5. Prepare Topping Pudding: In another medium bowl, combine the second package of chocolate instant pudding mix with 1 3/4 cups of milk. Refrigerate for about 10 minutes until fully set.
  6. Mix Topping: Remove the set pudding from the refrigerator and gently fold in the thawed Cool Whip and about 3/4 of the crushed Oreos into the pudding until combined.
  7. Assemble Final Layer: Spread the pudding and Cool Whip mixture evenly over the chilled cake. Sprinkle the remaining crushed Oreos on top for garnish.
  8. Serve or Chill: Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve for enhanced flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Be sure to allow the cake to cool fully before pouring pudding layers to prevent melting.
  • Crushing Oreos can be done by placing them in a ziplock bag and using a rolling pin for even crumbs.
  • To speed up pudding setting, use cold milk and chill immediately after mixing.
  • This cake serves best when chilled for a few hours or overnight.
  • For a more intense chocolate flavor, use a fudge sauce with a high cocoa content.
