These cookies combine rich cocoa flavor with a delightful Oreo crunch and a whimsical presentation, perfect for parties and special occasions.

Ingredients

Cookie Dough

  • 2 1/4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp Baking soda
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter (melted and cooled)
  • 1 cup Brown sugar (packed, light or dark)
  • 1/2 cup White granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp Pure vanilla extract
  • 2 Large eggs (room temperature)
  • 3/4 cup Oreo pieces
  • 1/2 cup Oreo crumbs (plus extra to top the cookies)

Chocolate Frosting

  • 1 1/4 cup Unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1 3/4 cup Powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1/4 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder (sifted)
  • 1 tsp Pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • Oreo crumbs (for decoration)
  • Gummy worms (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Oreo Pieces and Crumbs: Using a food processor, blend Oreos into small and medium pieces. Then blend some Oreos further to a fine crumb texture. Set aside.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugars: In a separate mixing bowl, use a mixer to beat the melted and cooled butter, brown sugar, and white sugar on high speed for 2 minutes until the mixture is well combined and aerated.
  4. Add Vanilla and Eggs: Mix in the pure vanilla extract and the eggs on medium speed until fully incorporated.
  5. Combine Dry and Wet Ingredients: Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir on low speed until just combined, taking care not to overmix.
  6. Incorporate Oreos: Fold in the Oreo pieces and Oreo crumbs gently until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  7. Rest Dough: Cover the bowl and let the cookie dough rest for 10 minutes to improve spreading during baking.
  8. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheets: Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  9. Scoop Dough: Using a large cookie scoop (about 2 tablespoons), portion the dough onto the prepared sheets, placing 6 cookie dough balls per sheet with space in between for spreading.
  10. Bake Cookies: Bake one sheet at a time for 12-14 minutes, until edges are set but centers remain soft.
  11. Cool Cookies: Allow the cookies to sit on the hot baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. Prepare Chocolate Frosting: Using a mixer, beat the room temperature butter on high speed for 3 minutes until fluffy. Gradually add sifted powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing on low until incorporated. Add vanilla extract and salt, then beat on high speed until smooth and creamy.
  13. Decorate Cookies: Use a small cookie scoop to place chocolate frosting atop each cooled cookie. Spread the frosting evenly using an offset icing spatula. Sprinkle with Oreo crumbs and top each cookie with a gummy worm for decoration.

Notes

  • Allow the melted butter to cool before mixing to avoid cooking the eggs when added.
  • Resting the cookie dough helps the cookies spread evenly during baking.
  • Baking one sheet at a time ensures even heat distribution and optimal cookie texture.
  • Use room temperature eggs and butter for best mixing results.
  • Gummy worms add a fun, playful decoration suitable for themed parties or Halloween.
