Description
Haluski is a comforting Eastern European dish featuring buttery egg noodles combined with tender fried cabbage and onions. This hearty recipe offers a flavorful and satisfying meal perfect for family gatherings or weekday dinners.
Ingredients
Pasta
- 1 (16 ounce) package medium-wide egg noodles
Butter and Vegetables
- 1 cup butter, divided
- 2 large onions, chopped
- 2 small heads cabbage, cored and cut into 1-inch pieces
- Salt and ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare Ingredients: Gather all ingredients and preheat your oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).
- Cook Noodles: Fill a large pot with lightly salted water and bring it to a rolling boil. Add the egg noodles and return to a boil. Cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes until noodles are tender but still slightly firm. Drain well and set aside.
- Cook Onions: In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt 1/2 cup of butter. Add the chopped onions and cook, stirring frequently, until translucent, about 5 to 10 minutes.
- Add and Cook Cabbage: Add the cabbage pieces and the remaining 1/2 cup of butter to the skillet with the onions. Cook and stir until the cabbage softens but does not brown, about 5 to 8 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Combine Noodles and Cabbage: In a large roasting pan, combine the cooked noodles with the cabbage and onion mixture. Stir gently to mix well. Adjust seasoning by sprinkling additional salt and black pepper if desired.
- Bake: Place the roasting pan into the preheated oven and bake until the top is golden brown, about 30 to 40 minutes.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add 3 strips of cooked and crumbled bacon to the cabbage and noodle mixture before baking.
- This recipe yields a large quantity, ideal for sharing with family and friends who haven't tried it before.
- To prevent the cabbage from browning, cook it on medium-low heat and stir frequently.
- You can substitute butter with margarine for a slightly different flavor profile.
