Description
This Crab Rangoon Dip is a creamy, cheesy appetizer inspired by the classic Crab Rangoon wontons. It combines cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, soy sauce, garlic, imitation crab meat, Monterey Jack cheese, and green onions baked to a bubbly perfection. Served hot with crispy homemade wonton chips, this dip is perfect for parties and gatherings.
Ingredients
Dip Ingredients
- 8 ounces cream cheese (at room temperature)
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ½ cup sour cream
- ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 8 ounces imitation crab meat (shredded or finely chopped)
- 1½ cups Monterey Jack cheese (freshly shredded)
- ½ cup green onions (sliced)
Wonton Chips
- 1 (12-ounce) package of wonton wrappers (sliced in half diagonally)
- Vegetable oil or olive oil for frying
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray a 1½ to 2-quart casserole or oven-safe dish with non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking and set it aside.
- Mix Cream Cheese and Base Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Then add the sour cream, mayonnaise, low-sodium soy sauce, minced garlic, and granulated sugar. Mix everything until fully combined and smooth.
- Add Crab and Cheese: Stir in the shredded or finely chopped imitation crab meat, half of the shredded Monterey Jack cheese, and all of the sliced green onions. Make sure the ingredients are well incorporated.
- Assemble Dip: Transfer the crab mixture into the prepared baking dish. Spread it out evenly. Sprinkle the remaining shredded Monterey Jack cheese evenly over the top of the mixture.
- Bake the Dip: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden. For an extra golden top, broil for 2-3 minutes, but watch carefully to avoid burning.
- Prepare Wonton Chips: While the dip is baking, heat vegetable or olive oil in a deep-frying skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat to 360-365°F (182-185°C). Slice wonton wrappers diagonally in half to create triangles.
- Fry Wonton Chips: Add 2-3 wonton triangles to the hot oil at a time and fry for 25-30 seconds until they begin to turn light golden. Remove immediately using a slotted spoon and drain on a cooling rack placed over a baking pan. Repeat until all wonton triangles are fried.
- Serve: Remove the baked dip from the oven and serve hot alongside the crispy homemade wonton chips, or with buttery crackers or tortilla chips of your choice for dipping.
Notes
- Use imitation crab meat shredded or finely chopped for best texture and easy mixing.
- Wonton chips can be fried in vegetable or olive oil; ensure oil temperature is consistent to avoid greasy chips.
- Broiling the dip for a few minutes is optional but recommended for a golden cheese topping.
- Store leftover dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat before serving.
