Description
Country Apple Dumplings combine fresh Granny Smith apples with crescent roll dough and a sweet cinnamon-sugar butter sauce enhanced by citrus soda, baked to golden perfection. This classic dessert offers a delightful balance of tart apples and sugary, buttery richness, perfect for family gatherings or cozy treats.
Ingredients
Apples and Dough
- 2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
- 2 (10 ounce) cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
Sauce
- 1 cup butter
- 1 ½ cups white sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle Mountain Dew
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking and prepare it to hold the apple dumplings during baking.
- Slice Apples: Cut each peeled and cored Granny Smith apple into 8 equal wedges. Set these aside for wrapping.
- Wrap Apples with Dough: Separate the crescent roll dough into triangles. Take each apple wedge and roll it in a crescent roll triangle, starting at the wide end and rolling toward the pointed tip. Pinch the edges to seal the dough around the apple entirely, then place each wrapped apple into the prepared baking dish.
- Make the Butter Sauce: Melt 1 cup of butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Once melted, stir in 1 ½ cups white sugar and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon until fully combined to create a sweet and spiced sauce.
- Pour Sauce and Soda: Pour the prepared butter, sugar, and cinnamon sauce evenly over the apple dumplings in the baking dish. Then, carefully pour 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle of Mountain Dew over the dumplings for a citrusy sweetness and moisture.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake the dumplings for 35 to 45 minutes or until the crescent rolls are golden brown and the sauce is bubbly and thickened.
Notes
- Using Granny Smith apples provides a tart contrast to the sweet dough and sauce, but you can try other firm apple varieties if preferred.
- Make sure to pinch the crescent rolls tightly around the apples to prevent leaking during baking.
- If Mountain Dew is unavailable, substitute with another lemon-lime soda or citrus-flavored soda for similar results.
- Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for extra indulgence.
