Ingredients
Butter Garlic Mixture
- 1/2 stick (1/4 cup, 2 ounces) unsalted butter, softened to slightly melted
- 1 to 2 cloves garlic, minced
Cheese Mixture
- 8 ounces (about 2 cups) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 4 ounces (1 cup) shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup chopped green onion (to taste)
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon sour cream (optional)
Bread
- 1 loaf French or Italian bread (Ciabatta recommended)
Instructions
- Make the cheesy topping: In a small bowl, mix the softened butter and minced garlic together until smooth and well combined. In a separate large bowl, combine the shredded sharp cheddar, shredded mozzarella, and chopped green onion. Stir in the mayonnaise and optional sour cream. Finally, add the butter and garlic mixture to the cheese mixture and blend thoroughly until evenly combined.
- Prepare the bread: Preheat your oven broiler. Slice the loaf of bread horizontally in half to create a top and bottom half, laying the halves crust side down on a foil-lined baking sheet.
- Spread the cheese mixture over bread: Evenly spread the prepared cheese mixture over the cut side of the bread halves, covering them completely.
- Broil the bread: Place the baking sheet under the preheated broiler. Broil the bread for about 3 to 5 minutes, watching closely, until the cheese topping is bubbling and nicely browned to a golden crust.
- Slice and serve: Remove the bread from the broiler and let it cool for about 5 minutes until it is safe to handle. Using a bread knife, slice the cheesy bread into 20 slices. Serve warm as a snack or appetizer.
Notes
- You can adjust the amount of garlic and green onion based on your flavor preference.
- For a richer flavor, use full-fat mayonnaise and sour cream.
- Broil carefully as cheese can burn quickly under high heat.
- This recipe is easily doubled or scaled to serve larger groups.
- Use a sturdy bread like Ciabatta or French bread for best texture and absorption.
