Description

This California Roll recipe offers a delightful and fresh sushi experience made with seasoned sushi rice, imitation crab, creamy avocado, and crisp cucumber, all wrapped in nori sheets and sprinkled with sesame seeds. Perfect for a homemade sushi treat, it combines classic flavors in a simple, no-cook rolling method ideal for sushi enthusiasts of all levels.

Ingredients

Rice Mixture

  • 2 cups cooked sushi rice
  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Roll Ingredients

  • 4 nori sheets
  • 8 imitation crab sticks
  • 1 large avocado, sliced
  • 1 medium cucumber, cut into strips
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bamboo mat: Lay your bamboo sushi rolling mat on a clean, flat surface. This will help you roll the sushi evenly and tightly.
  2. Season the rice: In a bowl, mix the cooked sushi rice with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until the rice is well seasoned and slightly sticky. Let it cool to room temperature.
  3. Place the nori sheet: Lay one nori sheet shiny side down on the bamboo mat to prepare for assembling the roll.
  4. Spread the rice: Evenly spread a thin layer of the seasoned sushi rice over the nori sheet, covering it completely, and then sprinkle the sesame seeds evenly on top of the rice.
  5. Flip the nori sheet: Carefully flip the nori sheet so that the rice is facing down on the bamboo mat, exposing the nori side upwards for adding fillings.
  6. Add the fillings: Place the imitation crab sticks, sliced avocado, and cucumber strips in a horizontal line along one edge of the nori to prepare for rolling.
  7. Roll the sushi: Using the bamboo mat, tightly roll the sushi starting from the edge with the fillings, applying gentle but firm pressure to shape a compact roll.
  8. Slice the roll: Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 6 to 8 equal pieces. Clean the knife between cuts to ensure clean slices.

Notes

  • Use short-grain sushi rice for the best sticky texture.
  • Keep a bowl of water nearby to wet your hands and prevent rice from sticking while handling.
  • For extra flavor, you can serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi.
  • Imitation crab can be substituted with cooked real crab or shrimp.
  • Ensure avocado is ripe but firm to avoid mushy rolls.
