Description

Enjoy the delicious flavors of Applebee’s Copycat Wonton Chicken Tacos with crispy baked wonton shells filled with savory Asian-style chicken and a refreshing, tangy slaw. These tacos make a perfect appetizer or light meal that’s packed with flavor and texture.

Ingredients

Chicken Filling

  • 2 chicken breasts, finely chopped into small chunks
  • 2 TBSP hoisin sauce
  • 1 TBSP sesame oil
  • 1 TBSP soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp minced fresh ginger

Wonton Shells

  • 14 wonton wrappers
  • Olive oil, for brushing

Asian Slaw

  • 1 bag coleslaw mix
  • 4 green onions, sliced thin
  • 1 TBSP sesame oil
  • 1 TBSP rice vinegar
  • 1 TBSP soy sauce
  • 1 TBSP honey

Toppings

  • Sweet chili sauce, for drizzling
  • Chopped cilantro, for garnish
  • Sesame seeds (optional), for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Bake Wonton Shells: Preheat the oven to 375˚F. Lightly brush each wonton wrapper with olive oil, then drape them over the side of a baking dish to form shell shapes. Bake for 7-8 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning. Remove from the oven and gently pull the shells apart while still warm to shape them. Bake again for an additional 3-4 minutes until the wontons become crispy.
  2. Prepare Chicken Filling: In a large bowl, combine the diced chicken breasts with hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, and ginger. Transfer the mixture into a large skillet and cook over medium heat until the chicken is fully cooked and golden brown, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  3. Make Asian Slaw: In a separate large bowl, add the coleslaw mix and sliced green onions. Pour in the sesame oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and honey. Toss everything thoroughly to coat the slaw evenly. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  4. Assemble Tacos: Carefully fill each crispy wonton shell with the cooked chicken. Top each with a generous amount of the prepared Asian slaw. Garnish with chopped cilantro and sesame seeds, if using. Finish by drizzling sweet chili sauce over the tacos for an added kick of flavor.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Serve immediately while the wonton shells are still crispy and the chicken is warm. These tacos are ideal for sharing as an appetizer or a light meal around the table.

Notes

  • Use fresh chicken breasts and finely chop for better texture inside the wonton shells.
  • Keep an eye on the wonton wrappers while baking to avoid burning due to their thin nature.
  • Gently pulling apart the wonton shells after the first bake allows for a better taco shape once crisped again.
  • Customize the slaw by adding shredded carrots or bell peppers for extra crunch and color.
  • Sweet chili sauce adds a balance of sweetness and spice, but adjust the amount based on your taste preference.
  • This recipe can be prepared ahead by making the slaw and chicken filling in advance; assemble just before serving to keep shells crispy.
