Description

This comforting Amish Hamburger Steak Bake features juicy ground beef patties smothered in a creamy onion gravy, baked to perfection. A hearty one-dish meal that combines classic flavors with an easy cooking process, perfect for family dinners or meal prep.

Ingredients

Beef Patties

  • 2 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or seasoned)
  • 1 Egg (Beaten)
  • 1 Onion (Finely diced)
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper

Gravy

  • 3 tbsp Butter (Salted or unsalted)
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour (For thickening gravy)
  • 2 cups Beef broth (Low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 Onion (Sliced)
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Mix Patties: In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything together just until combined to avoid overworking the meat.
  2. Shape & Rest: Form the mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped patties. Place them on a plate and allow them to rest while you prepare the gravy base to help them hold their shape during cooking.
  3. Brown Patties: Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium heat and brown the patties for about 3–4 minutes per side until they develop a golden crust. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  4. Make Gravy: In the same skillet, melt the butter and sauté the sliced onions until they become soft and fragrant. Sprinkle in the flour and stir continuously for about 2 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream, stirring constantly to create a smooth, thickened gravy. Add garlic powder for additional flavor.
  5. Bake Casserole: Nestle the browned patties back into the gravy in the skillet. Cover the skillet tightly with a lid or foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes. Then remove the cover and bake an additional 15 minutes to thicken the gravy and finish cooking the patties through.
  6. Rest & Serve: Remove the skillet from the oven and let the casserole rest for 10 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld and the gravy to set slightly. Serve warm with your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Using an oven-safe skillet allows seamless transfer from stovetop browning to oven baking.
  • For a thicker gravy, add an extra tablespoon of flour or simmer uncovered longer.
  • Ground beef with 80/20 fat ratio provides the best flavor and moisture.
  • Letting patties rest before baking helps them hold together better.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on stovetop or microwave.
