hey there!
Welcome to Recipes by Leila!
I spent twelve years working in political research and policy analysis. Bachelor's degree in Political Science, steady job at a consulting firm, the kind of career that looked impressive on paper and made my parents proud.
The work was fine. Important, even. I analyzed legislation, wrote policy briefs, sat through endless conference calls about electoral trends. But there was this growing disconnect between what I did for work and what made me actually happy.
The thing I looked forward to most each day? Coming home and baking.
While my colleagues unwound with Netflix or gym sessions, I'd be in my kitchen making lemon bars or experimenting with chocolate chip cookie ratios. Weekends meant testing new cake recipes. Stressful work weeks meant sourdough bread that required my full attention for hours.
My coworkers thought it was quirky. "Leila brought cookies again," they'd say, like it was this adorable oddity. But for me, those hours in the kitchen were the only time I felt completely present and genuinely myself.
The breaking point came during a particularly dull video conference about municipal voting patterns. I was supposed to be taking notes, but instead I was sketching out ideas for a raspberry tart I wanted to try. I looked at my screen full of tired faces discussing policy minutiae, then looked at my notebook full of recipe ideas, and thought: what am I doing with my life?
The Terrifying Leap
At 36, I made a decision that scared me senseless: I quit my stable job to figure out what came next.
Everyone thought I was having a midlife crisis. My family was concerned. My friends asked repeatedly if I was sure. I wasn't sure. I just knew I couldn't keep spending my days doing work that felt increasingly meaningless.
The first few months were strange. No alarm clock, no meetings, no structured days. I'd wake up without a plan and feel simultaneously liberated and terrified. What do you do when you've untethered yourself from the career you spent over a decade building?
I baked. A lot. It was the one thing that made sense, the one activity where I felt competent and purposeful. I'd make three different versions of banana bread in a week, testing whether brown butter made a difference (it does). I'd spend entire afternoons perfecting cookie techniques. My freezer filled with individually wrapped baked goods that I'd give to neighbors, friends, anyone who'd take them.
Finding My Purpose
About six months into my career break, a former colleague reached out asking for my chocolate chip cookie recipe. I sent it, along with detailed notes I'd made about technique. She responded: "This is so helpful! You should share these somewhere official."
That comment planted a seed. I'd spent twelve years writing research reports that maybe a hundred people read. What if I wrote about something I actually cared about? What if I documented these recipes I was testing anyway?
I launched Recipes by Leila in late 2022. The name was simple, maybe too simple, but it felt honest. This is just me, sharing what I make.
The early days were rough. I knew nothing about food photography, SEO, or how to actually run a blog. My first photos were terrible—harsh lighting, weird angles, cookies that looked beige and sad. But I kept at it, learning as I went, slowly figuring out what worked.
Two years later, this blog has become something I never expected: a actual career that brings me genuine joy.
What Recipes by Leila Offers
This blog is heavily focused on baking—cakes, cookies, muffins, tarts, all the sweet things that make life better. But I also share some savory recipes, because we can't survive on desserts alone (unfortunately).
You'll find:
Clear, detailed instructions – Written with the assumption that you might be new to baking or trying a technique for the first time
Accessible ingredients – Nothing that requires specialty stores or mail-order shopping
Practical tips – Shortcuts that actually work, and honest warnings about steps you can't skip
My Approach to Baking
I'm entirely self-taught, which means I've made every mistake you can imagine. I've burned things, under-baked things, confused baking soda with baking powder, started small kitchen fires, and shattered glass dishes by thermal shock (never pour cold water into hot glass, trust me on this).
Every mistake taught me something valuable. That's why my recipes include warnings about common pitfalls—I've already made those mistakes so you don't have to.
I approach recipe development the way I used to approach research: methodically, with detailed notes, testing variables one at a time until I understand what actually matters. My Political Science background taught me how to analyze systems and communicate findings clearly. Turns out those skills translate surprisingly well to recipe writing.
What I Believe
Baking should be enjoyable, not stressful. Yes, precision matters, but perfectionism ruins the experience. Some of my best bakes have come from happy accidents.
Anyone can learn to bake well. It's not some magical talent—it's technique, practice, and understanding why you're doing what you're doing. That's what I try to teach through these recipes.
The best use of your time is doing what makes you genuinely happy. It took me until my mid-thirties to act on that belief, but I've never regretted it.
Let’s bake something beautiful together!
Whether you’re looking for a special cake for an occasion or a quick cookie recipe to enjoy with coffee,
